A physicist by training with keen interest in photography and metaphysics, Ashish Dubey has been teaching at university level for over 20 years in Indore in the area of non-linear optics for which he received a PhD in 1998.

His conservation photography has raised awareness of dying wetlands. Homes to birds and reflections of the heavens, these beautiful habitats provide an opportunity to capture moments that exist very briefly during the intimate play of light.

He looks at photography to connect with the Supreme, as he believes that all art forms are an opportunity to engage with the unknown.

Made with patterns of intricate scribbles, circles and lines, Ashu’s landscapes and abstracts are layered and deep, offering the possibility for new interpretations each time one looks at them. Featuring mostly black and white compositions, Ashu’s subjects are always emphasized, with nothing to distract from the beauty of her pieces. An emerging artist with an aesthetic style that’s both distinct and confident, Ashu works and lives in Bangalore.

Devangana Kumar

A self taught artist, Devangana Kumar engages in the discourse of colonial hierarchy and aesthetics. Her personal history and her experiences as a student in Australia fuelled her interests in questions of caste – identity, slavery and racism.

Her first art series ‘Pageants of the Raj; The Workforce’ focuses on the lowest strata of society – the working class on whose shoulders the luxurious and comfortable lifestyle of a deeply hierarchical Indian society positions itself. Representation of stereotypes were evident in a number of photographs and memorabilia of the British Raj. She works as a conceptual artist reframing these existing colonial images and subverting the gaze by printing them on luxurious materials like velvet, embroidering, embellishing and encasing these large scrolls with ornamental borders.

Ganesh Selvaraj

Ganesh Selvaraj is one of the most talented and reflective artists emerging in Chennai. Interested in the process of being and of making, Ganesh’s paintings are conceptual and yet suggest essential forms, or in some cases voids, evoking a meditation upon the most basic questions of human experience – perception of our own experience of the world around us.

Ganesh Selvaraj has done his Bachelors and Masters in Fine arts from Chennai and Print Making from Edinburgh printmaker studio, UK. A recipient of numerous art awards and grands including Charles Wallace India Fellowship and Asia Pacific International art award, Seoul, Ganesh has participated in over 35 Group and Solo art exhibitions worldwide. He has participated in nearly a hundred group shows in India and abroad.

Art historian and curator, Lina Vincent, observed “The surfaces become a meeting point for the real and the abstract. The canvases seem to speak, spontaneously, when Shenoy’s brush comes in contact with them.”
The artist lives and works in Bangalore.

Educated at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California, the Bangalore-based lensman became the first Indian member of International Association of Architectural Photographers (IAAP).

Architecture has always been a special area of interest to Pallon whose work has covered a wide spectrum of private and public spaces. Bitten by the travel bug from an early age, he has toured extensively and photographed some of the most exotic, intriguing and unexplored nooks, corners and people of the country.

In the last two and a half decades, Pallon has dealt with all areas of photography: landscape, still-life, fashion, portraiture, performance, interiors/exteriors, industrial, and design. His images are critically acclaimed for their high aesthetic character where lines, colours, light, shade and texture are highly nuanced, immaculately balanced and filled with deep feelings and emotions.

Rohaan Sulaiman

Rohaan’s an explorer by choice and photographer by chance. A fascination for different cultures and the wilderness led him to travel the world. He uses photography as a means of capturing and documenting his love for adventure and the unknown. Being self-taught; his photographic journey began in his childhood with encouragement from his father and he has nurtured his technical skill and artistic eye by constantly learning and experimenting.

He is particularly skilled at capturing wildlife and portraits that help the viewer connect with the subject. Most of the things we see and encounter nowadays are artificial, fabricated, manipulated and dramatized with certain intentions we may or may not be aware of – Rohaan believes in presenting his craft with no editing; he has mastered the art of creating vibrant and colourful photographs without going too heavy on contrast or saturation. His work is presented in all its natural and raw glory making it relatable.

The works on display here are in two parts – an amalgamation of Rohaan’s travels to land of the Naga’s to delve deeper into their socio-cultural nuances and idiosyncrasies and; exploration of The Indian and African wilderness focusing on migration, habitats and conservation.

Curatorial Note

The art is here for the public and the public is here for the art.

Art in India still sorely lacks the awareness, appreciation and support that it receives internationally. Inconsistent governmental support and a lack of pro-art public policy, a dearth of quality galleries, museums and public art spaces, and only a handful of accessible art education institutions create a dynamic where art is largely misunderstood or ignored by the public. While the last decade has seen some positive development on this front, we are still a ways away from meaningfully bringing art to the masses and creating a society that is aware of, and takes pride in, the art and artists of their country.
